What's different about Watercolour Challenge - on Channel 5?

I just watched the first episode of the new Watercolor Challenge (Season 1 on Channel 5) and I'll mention below what I noticed in this version.

In addition to the "tightness" they have to fix to avoid running between competition organizers.

Here is the link to watch yesterday's show on My5 (on request) . It looks like Scarborough, but it really is Plymouth. Look down!

Devon Week: Artist Episode 1

what i noticed

  • The site is not suggested.
    • So it wasn't in front of Scarborough, Yorkshire Week, like the ad. Unfortunately, the official link to the show on Channel 5's website still shows a handsome Yorkshire boy with a Scarborough painting.
    • Instead, the program started with Devon Week and we were at the Royal William Yard in Plymouth, which I had never heard of. I keep thinking "It's not like Scarborough!"
    • Even Lisa Takahashi, the show's professional advisor/artist judge , thought Devon would be next week!
  • However, as always in this show, the place had a decent profile, history and what was interesting about it. In this case, it is a former Grade I listed naval supply yard with the largest number of Grade I listed military buildings in Europe.
Royal William Yard - with a watercolorist, lower left
  • is the artist
    • 50% retired and 50% paid
    • 75% of the four artists are over 55 years old, different from many watercolor companies/groups and those who watch the show regularly and who participated in the previous Channel 4 show.
  • Artists value/experience
    • What I would call an " ordinary amateur professional", such as being fairly qualified without being a professional, or even a part-time/part-time illustrator.
    • Not all artists are people who paint landscapes regularly, even outdoors. This is a common feature found elsewhere, for example the best gardener of the year. I wonder how it was clear to the artists that all the paintings would be natural and all the installations would be done outside, whatever the weather. Even though they all appeared in decent masks, I think they knew!
  • The artists are not identified by their full names. How about channel 5? If others can do it, so can you!
  • Fern Britain replaces Hannah Gordon
This is definitely a competition that should apply to respected amateur artists if there is another series.

What's different about this watercolor challenge series?

Verne Britton and Lisa Takahashi
  • The whole process (not to mention the winner) reminded me of what it was like to spend a week drawing with a decent art teacher.
    • Artist mentors/referees appear to be more involved in providing guidance and assessment throughout the process, both in conversations with artist candidates and in response to Fern Britton.
    • Lisa is very candid, very funny, identifies areas where people are good, but does not hesitate to solve problems where they are not.
  • There are always helpful and educational tips , including:
    • Help with configuration, such as why Ken brought his browser and Lisa provided some pointers.
    • Drawing versus drawing - and the challenge of getting enough time
    • Monochrome vs. Color Capture the Nature of Place
    • The most important things first
    • The challenges caused by certain places and how they can be overcome
  • The conversation between the consulting artist and the participating artists was respectful but constructive : Lisa adopted a Socratic approach to highlighting potential problems (for example, asking a "how" question rather than highlighting a problem).
  • Lisa provided an excellent and clear critique of each artist's drawing strengths and how the painting could be improved .
  • The artists had so much fun using the big brush , it's unimaginable that they could do anything with six sizes!
  • Over the course of this week, the artist himself has added an extra dimension that Channel 4 lacks.
    • Why was he the winner in the first episode.
    • It will be very interesting to see how the artists compare their notes with what they did and what they did, and how they will start their game tomorrow !
Why do you know he won?
  • There was also an artist profile attached to the place , which is interesting because the artist was Joshua Reynolds and I should have known some news I didn't know before. However, it would have been better if the artist had been a watercolor painter rather than a famous painter. As far as I know, I only use watercolors for drawing. Her career also relied heavily on her talent as a portrait artist and she painted some landscapes. Such an interesting confusion, but would it be nice to see a display of watercolor paintings that also show the past or present of watercolor masters?
I will be reviewing the other episodes but not all of them. Maybe balance every weekend?

Let me know what you think of the show, and whether it meets the old show criteria, or maybe even gets better.

Two or three fools

This is Bubu #1 - which can get anyone into trouble if they don't fix their PDQ.
