The "Landscape Artist" Conundrum.
I decided to explore the concept of "landscape painter" after making some criticisms of a landscape art competition.
What is a "landscape painter"?
Google is fascinated by the "landscape painter" theme for all the wrong reasons. Research results affect understanding
- what is the landscape - Many sayings about nature and the natural landscape - And renew your garden!
- what is the art of the landscape? - very focused on presenting natural scenes. Urban scenes and urban landscapes are not often mentioned, but it is clear that they can be something more than natural landscapes; And
- what an artist - really interesting - but not the topic of this blog post! (Maybe another one?)
According to many definitions that follow, Capability Brown would be classified as a landscaper!
In fact, Google doesn't seem to distinguish between landscaping, landscaping, and landscaping.

So I kept looking ....
Landscape painting, also known as landscape art, is a description of natural landscapes such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers and forests, especially when the main theme is a broad vision that combines elements in a coherent composition. WikipediaSo it has nothing to do with one of the landscapes recently presented to Sky Arts artists in the Landscape Artist of the Year nomination!
It's amazing how few valid definitions end up in Google's search terms. My research was a glossary of the artistic terms “landscape”.
The dictionary of the National Association for Education in Art and Design provides the following definition in a dictionary of various terms.
landscape painters
An artist who inspires the natural world and the countryside and creates works that express the interest, doubt, despair or pleasure of these elements.
There are many articles that tell you about the " most famous landscapers" or "landscapers you need to know ".
One of them is an article on the Priceless (auction details) page.
Landscape architects are those who describe the exterior in their work, such as hills or meadows, fields, mountains, lakes, edges, etc. scenes. As seen in landscape paintings by famous artists, this genre has elements that the natural world has above man. If people are described, they usually serve as a secondary compositional element.
While this may describe the past well, I'm not sure it's an accurate representation of contemporary landscape art.
I consulted Tate's Dictionary of Art Terms , which is often quoted by others.
It has a definition of landscape - but, surprisingly, not a landscaper - that begins
The perception of nature and its selection as a separate matter from art is a relatively new phenomenon. Until the twentieth century the landscape was confined to the background of portraits or paintings of religious, mythological or historical subjects (history painting ).
Today, landscape remains the main theme of art and many artists use documentary methods such as video, photography and classification processes to study our relationship with the place where we live and to record our impact on our land and our environment. . . .
In the second half of the twentieth century the definition of landscape was questioned. The genre expanded to include cityscapes and industrial landscapes, and artists began to use non-traditional media to create landscape works. For example, artists like Richard Long in the 1960s radically changed the relationship between landscape and art, creating works of art directly in the landscape. In general and to conclude, there are very few definitions for the landscape architect.
landscape design
A few years ago I started a blog called Landscape Art as a project.
In this article, I tried to develop a landscape art information summary to create a summary list using the Pages feature.
One reason for this was the lack of well-organized information on landscape art, available for free online . You can buy a lot of science books, but very few amateur place articles about beautiful places and very expensive books!
It doesn't get updated frequently now, but there are still many sources of landscape art.
