Royal Watercolour Society OPEN 2022 - deadline for entries is Monday!

The Royal Watercolor Society (RWS) is back to hold its annual Open 2021 competition after a hiatus, because you know what!

However , the deadline for registration is Monday 10 January 2022 !

Formerly known as the Contemporary Watercolor Competition (among many other names in the more than 50-year history of the show), the RWS Open is the world's largest outdoor fair for marine media, attracting thousands of attendees from home and from the abroad every year.
Frankly, I think RWS should be very careful with such claims because if they don't know how many questions they are attracting, they will outperform those who submit their work at the annual RI Open Show, otherwise they may have trouble advertising popular standards.

I guess they might say it's the only contest open to non-members only - but the way they explain it doesn't say it - and I know how many entries the annual RI Fair gets!

Open functionality of RWS

The primary use of this contest is as a platform to apply for membership in the Royal Watercolor Society . In fact, I'd say don't even think about applying unless you've entered this contest and been selected and hanged!

Other advantages are:

  • Your chosen work will appear on the Royal Watercolor Society website during and after the exhibition

Are there any rules for the watercolor technique? Do I only have to submit works that conform to traditional notions of watercolor?
Judges are looking for ideas, expertise and integrity - as long as the material meets the specifications of the submission guidelines, they will be interested in how it is used and will be amazed by the innovation and experience of traditional methods that use dictated media. 'water .
  • No style or subject restrictions
  • The table must have been completed within the last 4 years (2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, i.e. not as suggested in the instructions someone forgot to update!)

How to choose the painting to send?
Remember that judges see a lot of work in a short time. They are more likely to be drawn into the company by something special and from a personal point of view. They are looking for artists with a clear style and identity in all of the works presented, rather than many different painting styles.

    • David Rimphrey RA RWS | Artists
